It's grating to me how they've kinda fallen back into this pattern of "we can't advance this new timeline beyond MK4 because sales tapered off". Sales only really failed the later 3D games because frankly, they were not well designed from a gameplay standpoint. No one denies that much I think; Mortal Kombat as a respected competitive fighter is something relatively new (discounting UMK3). I just think they can make great games now, and they can do it with a variety of fresher characters that have never really gotten the chance to shine in a game that actually functions well as a fighter.

I'm sort of with you I think. I'd like to see at least a few more 3D era characters return, but also... a lot of those guys were pretty lame. Who would you want to see come back?

I'll be legit annoyed if Fujin isn't in this one finally. Also I'd like to see Havik again... maybe Hotaro could be alright too. And I always thought Mavado had a cool look even if he was just stealing Kabal's hook swords.

Mostly I just hope they don't abandon all the new characters from X. D'Vorah, Erron, and Kotal should get another shot... and at least a couple of the kids too.
