I'll just ask you to watch Tim Rogers review the game. He can explain why DQXI is so good far better than I can. I'll just add before release I also imported the Japanese 3DS version and played that a little bit before getting the english PS4 version. I'll probably play the Switch version whenever that ends up coming out for the added content!

After Dragon Quest VIII (which was the sole reason I bought a PS2 at the time) I was so excited for another DQ game that looked and played like that, but after that we got DQ9 on DS....and then DQ10 was an MMO and we never got it :(

Then DQ11 was announced and that it was going to be a massive single player jrpg like 8 was and for 3 years I basically campaigned for everyone to buy all the DQ spinoffs that were getting released here to ensure we wouldn't get another DQ10 situation and somehow miss out on the game.

The first 3rd of the game is like a greatest hits of Dragon Quest tropes, the 2nd 3rd of the game is like a greatest hits of Final Fantasy plot twists and then the final 3rd aka the post game it's suddenly Chrono Trigger. Honestly near the end of the main story (the 2nd 3rd) I wasn't sure if this game was going to be my #1 that first ending was a bit underwhelming, but I loved the postgame so much so much crazy shit happens and then the ending was both shocking and exactly what I was hoping for I just loved it so much.

As a result I finally found the RPG that I enjoyed more than Final Fantasy VI as my favorite JRPG. Earthbound, Mother 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles all came close, but they didn't quite get there. DQXI finally got there for me.

Also if you're one of those PC guys you can mod in the orchestrated music, but I've never been bothered by MIDI and I enjoyed the music just fine.
