Top 10 Favorite Games of 2018

4. Red Dead Redemption 2

RDR2 is difficult to rate. Red Dead Redemption 1 was my favorite game of all of last generation and John Marston one of my favorite protagonists. It feels almost impossible to follow up and yet Rockstar almost did it!

There's no timer in the game, but I probably spent over 250 hours playing RDR2 getting 100% and then another 50 playing Red Dead Online. Rockstar created one of the biggest and most realistic games ever made and that comes with both the good and the bad. There's so many things to do and see that I never really felt bored in all my time spent with it, but just like real life you can't really skip most of it. You have to see all the animations for everything you do in their entirety. Rockstar made sure you saw their 8 years of hard work even if it sometimes sacrificed the gameplay. Your character also moves slowly and can and will bump into all the geometry and you're always going to want to keep your horse near you at all times.

The story is the real gem here. It's easily the best story in any video game ever and the character arc of Arthur Morgan made me very attached to him, even at times preferring him over RDR1's version of Marston. They make that choice a bit easier just because Marston in this game is a much younger and foolish version of himself so it's easy to love Arthur instead. Every character in the gang while filled with western cliches feel like formed characters that you want to talk to and hear their opinions after every minor thing that happens in the story. I won't really get into spoilers you should really just experience this story for yourself but the story of the Dutch van der Linde game is one worth seeing. I love it even more in the epilogue as it begins to tie itself into RDR1 and begins to set that up.

The thing that stopped me from putting this higher is Red Dead Online. Sure it's still in beta and I'm sure just like GTA Online it'll get much better over time, but I played it now in the beta when there's almost nothing to do there's only like 8 story missions and then you're left to just do an endless string of repeatable stranger missions and deathmatches and horse racing. I personally enjoyed the horse racing the most!
