6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

If we were ranking these on hype cycle alone this would be the easy #1. No game builds as much excitement pre-release than a new Smash Bros game. I dont know how to do this write up without coming off as disappointed since Im not at all, but maybe it just speaks to the strength of the games above it on this list. Maybe its also because I havent finished World of Light yet and I hear it gets even way bigger and crazier than it already is.

BUT EVERYONE IS HERE!

We got all the previous characters from Smash 1-4 plus a ton of new ones! Ive been a Kirby main for all of them, but this is probably the best batch of new characters in terms of ones I would like to play and Ive really taken a shine to King K Rool and all his shenanigans. We got World of Light which is a massive map full of what would have been Event Battles in previous games with spirits you can earn that can equip for stat buffs and whatnot. Theres 1300 of these things thats a lot of Nintendo history right there! Even Classic mode is individualized for each character so that you will want to check them all out. As far as single player content goes this is the most theres ever been for any fighting game Ive ever played. It really delivers on the hype that Brawl failed to deliver on with Subspace Emissary.

Outside of the single player stuff its still Smash Bros. You know what that is if youve played it. Sure theres little changes here and there but the core experience is still the same. I think my nitpicks mainly come from the online because its still at the same level as it was with Brawl and Smash 4 where your options for matches are limited and the connection issues are very apparent. I have a wired connection on my Switch and while most matches are pretty good youll still get the occasional match that goes 1 frame per second in an attempt to match up the connections. Also the mode I was looking forward to playing the most, Smashdown, isnt even available to play online and neither is the tournament mode.

Despite that Ill still be playing this a ton online and I even plan on flying home to Michigan in April to compete in the Michigan Masters tournament in this game and some other fighting games. Im always down for any type of match up whether its 4 player stock and all items or the dreaded 1 on 1, no items, final destination matches so hit me up.
