And it's a clear decision not to refer to them in more natural verbiage that emphasizes their humanity (transman, transwoman, transpeople, etc) the way we do everything else. It's a quietly insidious way of reminding your reader that you think transpeople are fundamentally different from other people.

it's pretty similar to referring to black people as "the blacks"
