I don't mind Congress and the President still getting paid. the most corrupt and rich won't care either way, but it could impact the few elected officials who aren't wealthy, and lead them into making bad decisions in their haste to escape oncoming debt.

What SHOULD happen though, is that if there is an impasse, then the existing spending levels are maintained while it's sorted out and the employees still go to work and get paid.
If the president and/or some in congress are unhappy with the current spending levels and want to make a stand about it, put the onus on THEM to resolve it in a timely manner. Because otherwise each day that ticks by, the spending is done the same way.

But of course, then they couldn't have nearly as much theatrics about the stand off, nor get jollies out of economically crushing middle class federal workers.
