The easiest way to tell whether someone is truly moderate or not when they do this "equal opportunity" bashing of both sides is to see the severity of the things that they call out. Often times (in 2018 at least), these people will criticize liberals for a huge swath of policy positions and then balance that out by attacking Trump with really surface level conduct/decorum type things. this is 100% what I was thinking about but you're just better at writing words than me. thanks for explaining it --- ...
