I know he was mostly feeling bad about the lack of donations and started blaming the Patrons for the selection of games, but there were still a couple moments when he appeared to understand that the failure of the marathon was his fault. It wasn't just the fans complaining--he had failed to provide them with entertainment. I think if this rarely seen self aware side of Phil showed up more often, he might actually be able to improve.
