This perception that "smarks" go out of their way to hate on WWE is so ridiculous. They don't have to go out of their way - WWE really is that bad. They insult their audience's intelligence almost every minute and hate being even associated with the word "wrestling."

Smarks absolutely, absolutely do this. There can't be any debate about that. It's not a phenomenon exclusive to WWE either. Basically: everyone wants their own hate to stand out. When you go to a message board to vent you'll often find that somebody has already made your specific complaint. Or many people have. So what do you do then? Become another voice, lost in the crowd? Or do you force a new complaint? One that is contrived and desperate but that gets swallowed by the crowd because they really want any excuse to criticise the WWE at that time?

And since WWE does do so much dumb shit and they do create so much content to be criticised, there's a lot of chances for that to happen.

I'm surprised really that this is even an argument people would want to make - the notion that hardcore smarks are a problem is not something ridiculous and certainly not some new idea. That's not to absolve WWE of blame because they are a tremendously shitty company. They just also have a fair share of toxic, negative fans.

Edit: you're right that people don't have to go out of their way to hate on WWE but they do anyway. WWE gives people loads of free criticisms but when you see 50 different people making that same criticism, you want to create your own. Hence, they will "go out of their way" to come up with a new one. This happens with virtually anything on the internet.

Example of "wait and see" working: women's revolution. The initial 3-on-3-on-3 thing with the Bellas was dreadful and went on for months. People claimed the revolution had failed and that it had been a disaster. However, it was ultimately only a temporary thing and it led to the women having probably the MotN at Wrestlemania.
