Plus, it's funny you bring that up.ford had a excellent response to your exact accusation about his intellect. He said why does he need to know about random facts about history, when he can just hire somebody who does who knows the things he doesnt. This way he can focus his energies on his craft instead of on things that don't interest him.

Sure, but if he couldn't read or write, then clearly, given what he accomplished, they weren't a necessity for what he needed.
