Sounds more like a simple joke about technologically ignorant parents. But idk about the show or how "smart" its humor generally is.

It ranges a lot. Some (most) jokes are lame dad jokes but every once in a while they come up with something relevant and witty.

In this case the Wii U was bought by their dad who had since deceased in active line of duty as a fire fighter. It was a Christmas present but he died before he could give it to them. They found the gifts a few years later. I took the joke as the dad didn't die that long ago and the Wii U was already irrelevant by the time they found it.
