That's still not answering the question. Yes, more efficient city planning would be nice (albeit impossibly expensive), given the hideous inefficiency of the personal car as a regular mode of transportation. That's not, however, an answer to the question of whether or not the entire consumer automobile industry should be eliminated because people don't strictly need cars (an analogous suggestion to the one you made about the exercise industry).

If you don't like the car question, you may also consider one of the following analogies to address:
-The entire restaurant industry is a waste and should not exist. People can just eat at home.
-The entire entertainment industry is a waste and should not exist. People can just play catch with rocks.
