I enjoyed Furlong's performance because it's exactly what I would expect of someone raised the way he was. Traveling from place to place, trained to have to fight, being stuck in a foster home while his mother is in an asylum, of COURSE it made him a problem child. He's not going to be the pinnacle of badassery. He's a vulnerable child that is trapped in a world where he's expected to be the savior of humanity. He's gone through periods of his life with no real stable support system. I don't think his performance was whiny or annoying at all. It was honestly a good representation of how a kid like his character would act. See, for me, I dont care about realism if the reality is that the main character is fucking annoying. Ariel is a realistic depiction of a sheltered teenage girl, but shes still annoying as fuck. Tidus is a realistic depiction of a cocky jock thrust into a fish out of water situation, but hes still annoying as fuck.
