I disagree with this. They can be pursued for insecure reasons, but that's kind of what makes them stereotypically "manly" in the first place. The traditional concept of manliness that we've had is largely rooted in hiding insecurity.

That doesn't mean most of them are inherently bad though. There's nothing wrong with learning car stuff so you can be a smart owner of something that costs thousands of dollars, or watching sports because you appreciate the athletic feats and enjoy the stats, or working out because it keeps you active and makes you feel healthy.
