The switch from a manufacturing economy to a service economy certainly contributed as well, but so did the lack of increases in wages around the country after Reagan disbanded the ATC union which was a bellwether for all unions after that.

The greed of the Boomers and the whole taxes = bad bs led to much more money going to CEOs instead of reinvestment back into companies. NAFTA gave companies license to ship jobs overseas in the name of profits, because screw their loyal workers and their country. Couple that with weakening of antitrust laws, a decrease in apprenticeships and a focus on college degrees as a measure of success as well as people in dying industries refusal to get new skills and you get what we have today. A bunch of people with useless skills and a bunch of companies with nobody skilled enough to do the work. But hey, we have 3% unemployment, so everything looks all rosy.
