"An awesome sci-fi classic that hits every note it tries for. The Wachowski sisters have never managed to make massive exposition dumps as engaging and immersive as they are here. A lot of the CGI work is still incredible, even by today's standards, and the action is extremely well-choreographed and compelling without going off the deep end like the sequels do at times (particularly Revolutions; I have a soft spot for Reloaded but the Burly Brawl really is terrible). Keanu Reeves is an actor who needs the right role to be successful, and he has rarely been as right for a role than he is here." ~KBM

"What It Is: A place with no spoons.

Why It Matters: It revolutionized the direction of blockbusters and science fiction films for the better... and maybe the worse too.

What I Think: Imaginative and enjoyable, this movie would do better on a list without a lot of thoughtful, heavyweight pictures with some real substance. There's a lot of worldbuilding and innovation which I respect here, however. The Matrix creates a certain ambience that has become iconic and allows its lines to flourish and become memorable. It just lacks a certain thoughtfulness that would let it play in the upper echelon of this list." ~scarlet

"Still a landmark in action and sci-fi, that manages to be both brainy and fun at the same time. The Matrix occassionally collapses under its boat-load of influences but it never loses sight of its main reality concept and each action setpiece is better than the next." ~Snake

"Hey, a movie I omitted from my martial arts list. I dont think I wouldve ranked it that high if I did put it on there. I do like the world and atmosphere of The Matrix. The effects and choreography of The Matrix are still good, although Im not particularly amazed by it. The characters are cool despite being wooden. Morpheus is rad, and Keanu Reeves has some fun, silly lines as Neo. His romance, if you can even call it that, with Trinity is poorly done though. I wouldnt mind it if it was just something on the side, but it ends up saving Neo because yeah. The movie thinks its deep, but I dont dislike the movie despite its failed attempt. Its just cool and flashy." ~JONA

"I'm honestly a little hesitant to admit it, but I've always found The Matrix to be pretty overrated. I think this is my... third time seeing it? Every time, I think, yeah, it's fine. Solid enough action but it's never really blown me away. Maybe it's because by the time I had first seen it, bullet-time had already been done to hell by everything to come after, but I never think of it as something particularly cool, especially in The Matrix itself. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent enough movie. Morpheus is awesome, and overall The Wachowskis are damn good directors. It just never lived up to the hype as one of the greatest of all time. Also, Cypher was right." ~Johnbobb
