A lot of people go out and buy a one size fits all set when starting out but personally I think it's more useful to have a couple of solid bits of equipment you can use all the time with consistency. Nothing worse than trying to cook anything on a bent nd scratched aluminium frying pan.

Cast iron pans are good because they're cheap, super durable and easy to maintain. You're never going to ruin them or bend them. You just need to keep them seasoned and give them time to preheat properly. (they don't heat evenly at all, but retain hear super well).

FF redux is right although his sets are maybe beyond your budget.

Think about what kinds of pots you'll need and then figure out how far your budget will stretch. Personally I would want a good large cast iron pan, a decent size pot with a good base for things like rice and pasta and a dutch oven casserole dish to start.
