The Intercept is fucking trash.

Since GWHB's death, The Intercept has repeatedly pushed this idea that the US is responsible for Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait because then US Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie said the US had "no opinion" on an ongoing (at that point, nonviolent) dispute between Iraq and Kuwait over a variety of issues including the border and Kuwait's level of oil production. They pushed this idea in the full length version of The Intercepted Podcast, on the Deconstructed podcast, and also in their written articles. This is a nonsense argument, and one pushed by folks who basically blame the US on every bad thing in the world. When she said that, she was referring to a diplomatic dispute between the two countries, she was not saying the US had no opinion on an invasion, which the US did not predict at the time was actually something Saddam was considering. And yet, The Intercept has blamed it all on the US that Saddam decided to invade and annex another UN member state.

Another thing that invalidates this theory is that Saddam had plenty of time to pull out of Kuwait once he found out that the entire rest of the world was outraged and in complete opposition to the idea. Did he pull out? No, he kept his troops there until they were forced out by an international military coalition.

I used to be a Jeremy Scahill fan, but over the last few years it has become evident that he is a dishonest actor. The same goes for the entire staff of The Intercept (maybe with a few exceptions).
