I think a lot of people turn away from the religion that they were raised on because they're supposed to blindly believe in someone else's spiritual experience. It makes sense. You really need to have your own experience. I became spiritual because of my personal experiences (with meditation, dreams, entheogens, etc). In the end, all we truly want is survival, happiness, and peace in our lives and spiritual practice simply works.
