"In a rare turn of events, Poe was outsmarted by General Hux. But along the way to that conclusion, we were treated to a well crafted mindjob where we were practically trained to not trust one character when the innocent damsel in distress was cold blooded all along. It was a swerve we should have seen coming, but just couldnt. Not to mention Oscar Isaac is the fucking man and everyone should know it. He was such a likeable asshole. And that scene where he dropped that pun about tearing up the dance floor was priceless. I want to see him in more roles.

Traviss Opinion: Butts and boobs and fucks and oh dear lord this is very much R (Travis did not watch this omg.)" ~Stifled

"Ex Machina had an ending I found somewhat predictable so it wasn't too terribly disappointing when it came to fruition. I was thrilled when Nathan got exactly what was coming to him until I realized he wasn't the bad guy so much as the misguided creator burdened by the weight of his own genius. I suppose there really wasn't a bad guy all along, but Ava really did Caleb dirty and he didn't deserve to starve to death. Oh well, never trust a machine no matter how good they are at faking empathy!" ~Genny

"My biggest issue with this film is, of course, the ending. I am not sure if we're meant to feel empathy for Ava by then or not. To me, it seems to me Nathan was probably right. Ava was not yet the final version she was meant to me, because I feel she clearly lacked the humanity she needed when she coldly leaves Caleb behind like that. Then again, maybe that's what makes her human? I don't know, I just know I didn't really like it and I felt it made her an unlikable protagonist which can severely damage a film for me. Before that though, the film does have a lot to offer in terms of her Turing testing process; the day is coming when perhaps machines can reach this level of intelligence and when it happens, will we too be tricked into believing in them before realizing their true motives? I don't know, this is a newer film and at some point I got a little worn down by the "never trust a robot" schtick I think" ~Charon

"Id just like the point out that, despite ranking this film second-to-last on my list, Id still put it in the upper HALF of most of the other lists weve watched. Okay, maybe thats exaggerating, but my point is that on this particular list, second-to-last isnt necessarily a bad thing. Id STILL say that only number 40 was outright BAD. That being said, Ex Machina just didnt do it for me. I didnt particularly care for the characters or feel any sort of emotional connection to any of them. Poe Dameron felt like a generic douche, General Hux felt like a pussy and a pushover, and the robot girl wasnt quite menacing enough for me to give a shit about her. She just seemed normal, which made the over-the-top heel turn (leaving Hux to die) feel forced and stupid.

PLUS, the film was a little too heady for me. I get that its sci-fi, and I can appreciate some science in my science fictionbut youve gotta deliver that science with a little bit of personality, which I already saiddidnt appeal to me in this cast. I mean, I get why it got Oscar buzz, butI also get why it only really won for visual effects. Im sorryit just kinda bored me and lacked even a standout segment to make the film feel memorable in the long run." ~Inviso
