"I love how chaotic this movie is with its vast use of time travel. It really makes you think about how much James Cole goes through. Bruce Willis does an awesome job as a man whos going insane and the characters romance with Railly is uncomfortably forced but also feels needed for the sake of their sanities. Brad Pitt also does an amazing job in his role and almost steals the show. The movie has this great, dark atmosphere which fits very well with how the characters minds deteriorate. The mystery of the virus is just incredibly engaging. " ~JONA

"What It Is: The human race's future is in jeopardy thanks to Brad Pitt and some make-up test subjects.

Why It Matters: Hard sci fi was experiencing a renaissance in the 90s and the massive worldwide box office success combined with awards season plunder makes this one of the most popular 90s sci fi films.

What I Think: Generally, hits (or modest hits, anyway) like 12 Monkeys dont appear much in the Hollywood scene. We get space adventures all the time, and half-philosophical ones like Prometheus if were lucky, but the thriller elements of 12 Monkeys are wholly in service of ideas about time travel, memory, and subjective reality that are remarkably heady for an American movie. More remarkable still is that Gilliam doesnt curb his aggressive, alienating style for the purposes of mass entertainment. He slaps on the fisheye lenses and dives into a dense, frenetic dystopia in which the audience is made to feel just as disoriented as Bruce Willis. Gilliam also develops a delightful red herring and plays around with his concepts with such ease and madness that I daresay that it's virtually incapable of being duplicated. Combine that with a brilliantly bizarre performance from Pitt (an actor who, in my estimation, is too often underrated), and you have one of the best science fiction movies I've ever seen. Borrowing heavily from La Jetee but also Vertigo, 12 Monkeys is hard sci-fi with a soft center, a film of ideas thats nonetheless flush with outsized passion and emotion. Gilliam gave Hollywood a movie with adventure and heart, after allhe just did it his way." ~scarlet

"Nobody does dystopian futures like Terry Gilliam. The man is a creative genius, and several of his films are among my all-time favorite. Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt are both at their best here, and the time travel is handled so cleverly and impressively that Rian Johnson felt the need to send Bruce Willis back in time to his younger self again 17 years later." ~Johnbobb

"Depressing and fantastic all in one breath. When you realize that Cole is basically locked into a timeline where he is being sent back almost to assure that things happen the way they need to so those in the future can have their future set out, it makes it all the more sad when the film doesn't do anything to change this fate. Even though the movie has a sad ending, I still loved the characters so much. It's a small cast manned by talents actors, especially so in the case of Pitt as Jeffrey. This might actually be my favorite role of his I've seen; he plays this part to such an incredible level I have to wonder what sort of methods he went through to nail this part so much. Up until the very end I was certain he was involved in the grand scheme of things too, yet somehow he wasn't after all. A really surprising treat of a film." ~charon
