Another good thing about Steam in particular is that users can leave reviews for the individual DLC's in addition to the game itself, so you know which DLC's are worth getting, and which ones are steaming piles of crap. That aspect can help protect your wallet as you try to get the good stuff and avoid bad stuff. You can also disable the individual DLC too if you want to play a more vanilla game. I really only want one DLC because it unlocks the first playable time period which sucks since it's behind a paywall and you can see it in the main menu.
