"This film was LOOOOOOONG. And its really two movies more than just a singular storyline. On the one hand, you have a very heady science film all about space travel, wormholes, physics, and the effects of gravity through space and time. And while Im sure that appeals to some people, for me, it felt very slow. And not just slow, but it really made that nearly three-hour runtime feel like it was dragging on. However, the more emotional aspect of the film, centered around Matthew McConaugheys Cooper, was far more successful at intriguing me as a viewer. The very concept of this father going off to try and save the world and protect his children is made all the more heartbreaking by the theory of relativity putting him in a position where he has to watch them age and forget about him. He fights so hard to not only find a better world, but also get back and be with his family one last time, as he promised. That ending scene feels extremely well-earned as a result, and it felt like a proper cap to an emotional storyline. Also, TARS is adorable. Thats all. And fuck Matt Damon." ~Inviso

"What It Is: The world is ending, so it's time to seek new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no man has gone bef- wait, what are YOU doing here?

Why It Matters: While I capped the age of films so we could have a little separation from release and review, this is one of two films in the most recent entries from which we ranked films. Nolan's blockbuster made massive piles of cash and also saw love during awards season, and it's definitely an example of how far sci fi has come in the 90 years since the first film on our list.

What I Think: It's just a personal preference, but I found this movie to be quite a drag. There are these great nuggets of innovation and creativity in this movie, but they are so mired in a plodding plot, and I just couldn't get myself to interested in what I was watching for the most part. I can't tell you exactly why that was, and I can't really provide great criticism here. My gut reaction was just sort of a yawn punctuated by brilliant ideas that come together to convey a message that... feels pretty rehashed after 2001: A Space Odyssey. Maybe, overall, I just don't care that much about the destiny of humanity. For all of that complaining, I actually like the film a lot. I just don't love the film, and on a list of movies I do really love, that hurts its ranking. The surprise guest appearance guy and the world of tidal awesomeness have really stuck in my head, as has the fantastic score of the film. But the larger themes of the movie just don't penetrate my interest. It's honestly Nolan's worst film from a deeper, thoughtful perspective. That's not really saying much." ~scarlet

"Give me those outlier points! There are a lot of cool ideas and effects shown in the movie but its just not a great complete package. With a running time of nearly 3 hours, its somehow both too long and not enough. The film starts showing its version of Earth and how its new environment affects the people that are living in it and its a cool, different version. Too bad the main character just goes to space after that worldbuilding and we only get to see bits of it afterwards that focus on the main characters family. Matt Damons character shows up to make the space mission finally interesting, although the ocean world looked kinda neat, but Matt Damons character didnt fit the world and put the main plot on hold. The film has so much exposition, it didnt give time to get attached to the characters and the emotional moments of the story just felt manipulative as a result. I think this would have been stronger as a TV series, since that would have given more time to flesh things out." ~JONA
