Also not buying anything used online. I want to be able to look at the disc before walking out of the store.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with discs not working buying used online, but, I've had plenty of defective discs buying used in store. I've been buying used games since the early 2000s.
Ebay/Amazon sellers don't want to ruin their seller feedback by selling defective games. People who trade them in stores on the other hand, probably just want to make a quick buck and they don't even face any consequences for trading defective shit.
I only use Amazon now for used games and I have never had a problem. The discs generally look better and there are no stickers on the cases either.

I've gotten one bad disc from GameStop and the pro was i got it replaced in just a day. Just took it back the next day and got a new one. Anytime I've sold to GameStop which I don't anymore they have inspected every disc.
