I won't pretend to know anything about the prospects the Mets sent over but it still doesn't make much sense to me. They offloaded Jay Bruce but AFAIK they still end up with more bad contract money on the books thanks to Cano (the Mariners are effectively paying $20M of Cano's contract is my understanding).
