I'm guessing after the final battle I go back to the open world? It's been a hallway of sorts for a while now. You are getting close. Last area is slightly more open I guess royal edition more so. And yeah after you beat the game it returns to open world. You should be able to go back open world at rest spots though even before the final battle.
