I can't speak to this specific week's weather, but we've seen a few instances in recent years of "polar vortexes", which are the result of cold arctic air traveling further south than it otherwise would, a product of a weakening jet stream:

Thanks, that was useful. So if Im understanding correctly, its not that the Earth warming up directly leads to swings leading to cold weather, but that the warming sets things off in motion that thereby creates volatility both ways. See, instead of just calling people dumb for their lack of knowledge, maybe they should actually try to inform others. But I realize thats too much for these folks
