Well, I may have sparked yet another "DLC" vs. "Microtransactions" debate. There's a fine line between the two, but when I was excluding microtransactions in the OP, I was more referring just the purchase of virtual currency. You purchased in-game content with the money, so IMO, that's still DLC. The problem with virtual currency is that you can spend it on anything (especially in mobile games, where you're spending the currency for nothing more than speeding up a task, or eliminating RNG chances at crafting success, etc.) Sometimes it's hard to tell what will actually bring value. I've seen some people spend hundreds of dollars on mobile game "gatcha" mechanics that was literally gambling with no "content" to show for it whatsoever. --- Money is overrated... ...
