Overall no. I'd rather the person straight out ask if there's anything I could use/need and choose among that list of items or consult my Amazon bookmarks/"wishlist". I mostly prefer tangible gifts as a way of remembering the act of that person gifting me said item. Granted I can just use said money to buy what I need/want and remember them through that but it's not quite the same as them choosing the gift.

Now if said person is not a friend or family member and have no means of knowing what I like, then I would consider cash/gift card acceptable. But I kinda expect more from friends and family to not give something as impersonal as cash/gift card. To me it just mean they didn't bother trying.

I can understand the concern of being gifted something I might have no need of which will essentially be a waste of money. I personally would feel guilty if said person feel obligated to use something that I gifted them but they have no use for. Which is why I'm perfectly find with providing someone a "wishlist" of items I've been eyeing. I still get the "surprise" factor and said money actually goes toward something useful.
