I've seen some games where people attempt to play defensively/stay small, but then you're limited by the stuff you can do. Yeah it's pretty hard (and kind of boring) to play tall in CK2. I had a game where I started as a Duke on the edge of the map in India just trying to play small. But through alliances and events I had a really easy path to King.
