The most important thing is I want to teach mine to not be a bully.

Of course, stand up to bullies. Some things are low hanging fruit, and easy pickings for bullies, like having a wheelchair bound dad.

Like, what defense does a 7-9 year old have against kids laughing at you for something like that?

Honestly, I'm not sure what that has to do with what we are talking about. Yeah, it sucks, but it doesn't really change what we were talking about.

Basically, I feel like if you ask your child to change who they are or what they want or how they feel to stop them from being targeted for bullying, you are just perpetuating a cycle of bullying that will inevitably lead to worse self-esteem issues in the future. I'd rather teach my child how to be who they are and survive than to tell them to hide who they are so they can blend in and live in fear of those who would abuse them.
