The movie's establishing the main theme of hopeless dreamers, with the juxtaposition of the very realistic and mundane traffic jam with fantastic and surreal song and dance that might match their showbiz fantasies about what LA might be like. The characters themselves aren't important, they all represent the small-town dreamer who moved to LA to try and make it big.
