I think the big difference between Master hand and L-block is that Master Hand's at least kind of sort of a character, while L-block's just an inanimate object the player controls.

You could easily compare Master hand to something like Glover or even Bowser, while L-block is closer to calling Mario's overalls a character; it has more joke appeal.

Master Hand it's not impossible Master Hand could get rallied and take off or anything, it just doesn't seem all that likely to me, especially when he's already been in a contest once before and didn't go that far.
