They just throw in as many as possible and hope that some are effective, to the point where it no longer has any effect by the middle of the movie. The atmosphere is kinda cool - reminded me a lot of Woman in Black how it's set at a big secluded, decrepit building shrouded in mist with mysterious shadowy figures everywhere.
