No. By definition, any animal, regardless of how simple or complex, is "killed" when you actively end its biological functions. Even germs and bacteria are killed if you spray them with antibacterial cleansers or wipes.

You CAN differentiate between whether killing an animal can be considered "murder" versus simply being killed (and the answer is, it ISN'T murder, no matter how much someone may love their pet), but "destroyed" is just a euphemism people use because they're too uncomfortable to use the actual truth (see also, why militaries often use terms like "terminate" or "neutralize" instead of "murder the fuck out of those insurgents").
