Really well done, surprisingly straight-forward and conventional in many areas but it made the really fucked-up parts stand out a lot more which I liked. Toni Collette's performance is one of the horror history books too. Yes she was brilliant Charon and I just got back from Summer of '84. Went into this knowing almost nothing about it and it was quite a surprise. The first 40 minutes or so all I could think was that wow this is trying so hard to be Stranger Things, but it got way darker than that. The tone, the humor, and the theme all ended up seeming very mature. It was a good watch although unfortunately our experience was... compromised by a trio of drunken idiots right in front of us. It wasn't enough to ruin it completely, but I can't help but feel like a lot of it got lost and considering this is a very limited release film we're not going to get the chance to see it in theaters again.
