You can customize appearance, but as far as customizing abilities goes, that happens over the course of the game like any other ARPG. Ya, that's the main selling point - unlike Diablo, this game has legendary item sets for every single skill combo in the game (except for maybe Inquisitor unless they patched some in) --- "Salt cures Everything!"
