Fairly sure everything in the spoilers is stuff you've seen at this point, but still gotta put them:
Dude starts off being a sexist, ignorant dude who didn't believe in spirits, thought bending was some weird magic, and was just the write-off comic relief, to being this super smart, talented mastermind who figures out about the Eclipse and helps plan an entire invasion force, while being a competent fighter and leader in his own right.

and also being his own person. i feel like he's a square peg in a round board...if that makes any sense. and the master who trained him recognised that and allowed him to make the most of it
