Question for American friends with a good aknowledge of the system:

In the UK and other systems, if a politician or candidate does or says something really bad they can get booted out of the party ("withdrawing the whip"), even if they have already been elected. In such a case they keep the post but are independent.

Does this happen in the US? I ask because I keep seeing Republicans who have said or done absolutely outrageous things just carrying on no problem. Like Missouri "Jewish conspiracy to steal baby organs" and "Hitler was right" guy. How on Earth is he allowed to stay in the party and run for election as a Republican?
