so is this your desktop? make sure the dongle is on the side of the computer pointing towards the AP, so that the signal doesn't have to go through the machine, for example.

otherwise, probably a PCI adapter would be better than a USB one. something with an antenna. and then note that the antenna signal is cylindrical around the antenna, so don't point the end of the antenna at the AP, point the edge of the antenna at the AP (generally, point the antenna up). also you can buy a larger antenna for not much.

if you're going to drop a lot of money, you should maybe get a bridge rather than just an adapter. then mount it somewhere good, and run a network cable to your PC.
