The way they explained it, story-wise, made sense and worked with the mechanics of the game. ...and then you have the way Fates handled it. They kind of had to include the second gen character mechanic again in Fates after how popular it was in Awakening. The problem was they kind of backed themselves into a corner when trying to explain how it makes sense from a story perspective.
