TopicReal talk: Why does Freemasonry use the downturned pentagram?

I decided to become a Freemason years ago on a whim, because it seemed like an interesting thing to do. Also, a requirement for joining is that you believe in a God, so I figured it would be positive, although that Catholic church was against it.

I joined and was pleasantly welcomed with the Christian Holy Bible, upon which we take all our vows. I had hopes of getting to the top degrees in the appendant bodies of being a Knights Templar. I was also interested in joining the Shrine, but backed off when I realized it used the Muslim Quran, and I didn't want any part of that.

Well, it was after I was deeply into everything that friends started sending me propaganda about the Freemasons secretly being Satanic. I brushed it off as much as I could but there was always the nagging feeling of what if it really is true?

So I started asking my brethren their thoughts on it, and most backed up that they are Christians and would never be in anything Satanic. Other young ones gave me the bullshit answer of being spiritual but not religious, rejecting the modern church while believing in a higher power, whatever.

Still though, I would study my Bible and tell myself that everything is on the level.

And yet, right there in front of my face, we have the symbol of the Order of the Eastern Star, our appellate body for women, usually the wives of masons. This symbol is clearly a downturned pentagram, though much friendlier looking than the obvious Satanic ones.

You can then look at the Masonic symbols, the square and compass, and realize that when you put them together in that way, they form much the same shape. It's a makeshift pentagram using these tools.

This has honestly been something nagging at me for years. I don't know what to do with it. My dad has even talked about joining and I kept him out just on the possibility that this is secretly some selling your soul out to the devil shit. I don't think it is, and obviously it's full of good Christian people, but also the possibility of shady evil shit at the top scares me.
