It's the only form of entertainment where the audience are really treated as participants that are "supposed" to react a certain way. They're almost as much a part of the show as the actual performers. At the same time, they're paying customers, so they're not obligated to react in that certain way and it's really up to the company to connect with them in such a way that they do. I wish wrestling was respected enough that any significant number of academics would study it the way they do television or music or what have you. It's such a unique medium that it would be really great to see the kind of theories folks would come up with.
