I personally think it's a slight upgrade on Awakening with the addition of the between levels hub-world and other extended character interactivity. If pairing characters up is what you find most enjoyable, Birthright is a lot more lenient with the unlimited skirmishes it throws at you to build up support ranks. Conquest is a lot more traditional in that regard.
