Then what do you do when you connect with somebody on LinkedIn? Send an awkward, cookie-cutter message? I don't like that stuff. I can tell when somebody is trying to network with me and it always feels so transactional. I don't want to make other people feel like that way. Nor do I really like the "pretend like you just want to hang out" approach, since that's equally phony, but you don't even cut to the chase fast enough.

I'm sure either approach works for the right people, but me, I'm just too self-conscious. I think there's a certain degree you have to have no shame to be an effective networker, cause it's basically like being a salesman.

Basically. But it can easily work. You don't even have to pretend to just want to hang out. It may seem transactional, but it doesn't mean you can't actually connect with them. Be honest. And some people understand that you just need the connections and will help you. Being social does help. But it will be hard to make connections with people without being social...
