Was worried for a good part of it that itd end up being just a condensed version of Ashita no Joe, especially the ending, but Id say it turned out great in the end. Argh jealous!!! I dunno if the subbed version is available yet. But it's by far my favorite anime of the season. I don't think Ashita no Joe ended with a Yuri vs Joe equivalent fight anyways, did it? I thought it was like some dude who was just really really good at boxing. Well, I was more worried about the ending being too close to ~~the circumstances and drama surrounding Rikiishis death~~. In Joe, ~~Rikiishi died from his injuries and health issues after fighting Joe way before the ending~~ and ~~Joe ended up dying fighting the world champion in the end~~. Megalo Boxs gear-related shenanigans can more or less replicate those circumstances in a shorter time, and the final fight can play out as a condensed version of that ending, so to speak. Yeah I feel like it's a terrific mix of both old and new just from the art direction, general style, the plot, the characters and all.
