I mean... he's right. There is already a pretty great degree of socialism in America. Not like Europe but there are still a great amount of social programs and institutions. Healthcare is one of the only defining separating factors between America and Europe. The overwhelming majority of the country is in support of the social institutions and programs that we have in place so to some degree the US is very close to the center, if not slightly left by default. I'd argue moderate conservatives in this country aren't actually that far right of center.
