Gundam has tanks, too.

Ya, I know that - and I pointed one out in the original post. I'm asking how they canon-historically phased them out.

The real reason is Mobile Suits weren't originally suppose to even be used on earth, only space use. But Tomino had to change it when he started the anime. Anyways, in the universal century story line (the main timeline for gundam) the earth federation did use a bunch of tanks, as they didn't have the resources to mass produce mobile suits early during the war, unlike the Zeon forces. Zeon was significantly ahead during most of the One Year War, invading earth and gaining a pretty big foothold on earth. Anyways, to site some examples, you can see the MS Igloo 2 and the battle of Odessa when both sides used various tanks as well as other types of weapons.

As for why they were phased out, at the end of the One Year War, the Earth Federation finally catches up and can mass produce mobile suits of their own. Tanks aren't nearly as viable as most conflicts are taking place in space and colonies, and mobile suits allow you to fight effectively on both fronts. Mobile Suits are able to be used in combat, as well as labor such as repairing or moving cargo between ships. Tanks become obsolete once every side can effectively and affordably field their soldiers with mobile suits.
