#24:

Several factors over the course of decades caused 7up's decline, some were self inflicted and the rest was due to new competition.

When Sprite was introduced by Coca-Cola in the early 60s, it was an afterthought until the 80s when they began to market it more aggressively and Coke forcing some major distributors and restaurants to also server Sprite instead of 7up if they still wanted to serve Coke. Coke has since relaxed these policies, but the damage was already done.

It also did not help that starting in the 70's 7up began to constantly change their recipe and changed the taste. This is something they still do today and turned off many people to it over time.

On top of that, the rise in popularity of Mountain Dew in the 90's did not help either as it was marketed as a type of anti-7up with more caffeine.
