They are supposed to be mounted at a 90 degrees. They are not used like regular iron sights. You can have normal flip up sights on your rifle all day long, but if your optic goes to shit when you are engaging what are you going to do? Take the time to take the optic off so you can use your flip up sights?

The amount of time it takes to tilt your gun at an angle and line up the sights is minimal. It might seem like an odd shooting position, but it works. I've attended the armys SFAUCC 3 times and this technique of shooting was taught every time.

I have seen lots of 45-degree offsets and I understand their purpose, but I've never seen 90 degrees. Just tried it with my rifle and it seems like an extremely awkward hold, obviously not something I've ever practiced or trained.
